What is a Tracking Number?

Tracking numbers
are used to track each of your traditional and online advertising channels so that you always know which ads are performing. The numbers can be placed in your offline ads, or you can use dynamic number insertion to have your online numbers appear automatically on your website when someone comes through a channel you’re tracking. Dynamic number insertion, also known as DNI, will be covered in the Target Number and Tracking Code portion of this course.

Tracking numbers commonly track and attribute activities, such as phone calls, text messages, form submission, and online chats, to individual marketing campaigns. They can also be assigned to individuals as direct or personal phone lines.

Tracking numbers are specific phone numbers—they can be either local or toll-free numbers—that route to business phone numbers.

The individual tracking numbers allow marketers to gauge the performance of specific marketing channels and/or campaigns as part of the call tracking process.
